In towing, a truck in the shop is lost revenue. Every call you can’t take goes to the company one town over, and a replacement wrecker or rollback is one of the biggest checks a small towing business writes.

Most towing owners finance that growth instead of paying cash. Here is how the main options work, what lenders look at, and how to prepare so the process moves smoothly.

How towing companies finance trucks and equipment

Equipment financing is the most common way towing companies add or replace units. The truck itself secures the loan, which usually means a lower down payment and longer terms than an unsecured loan.

Common uses include:

  • Light-duty wreckers and wheel-lift units for police rotation and roadside calls
  • Rollbacks and flatbed carriers for dealer, auction and private-property work
  • Heavy-duty wreckers and rotators for commercial recovery
  • Used units from auctions or other operators, where the lender reviews the year, mileage and condition

Before you shop, run a payment with our equipment financing calculator so you know what monthly number your call volume needs to support.

Covering cash flow between calls and slow payers

Equipment is only half the picture. Towing companies also carry fuel, insurance, impound lot costs and payroll while waiting on motor clubs, fleet accounts and insurance companies to pay.

Two options are worth knowing:

  • Working capital: a lump sum repaid over a set term, often used for insurance renewals, repairs or seasonal slowdowns.
  • Business line of credit: draw only what you need and repay as accounts pay you, which suits uneven monthly volume.

If a few large accounts pay on net-30 or net-60 terms, invoice factoring can turn those open invoices into cash sooner.

What lenders look at for a towing business

Every lending desk has its own criteria, but most review the same core items:

  • Time in business and revenue: steady monthly deposits matter more than one big month.
  • Bank statements: usually the last three to six months, with attention to negative balance days and existing daily or weekly payments.
  • The truck: year, make, model, mileage and seller (dealer, auction or private party).
  • Insurance: commercial auto and garage keepers coverage in place, or quoted.
  • Credit: owner credit is reviewed, but it is one factor among several.

Not sure where your file stands? Our Small Business Capital Index shows how open the lending market is right now. As of October 2026 the Wall Street Journal Prime Rate is 7.00%, and benchmarks like that shape what lenders offer. Rates are benchmarks, not quotes.

A real example from a towing company

A towing company in Fort Wayne lost the transmission on its only heavy wrecker. Equipment financing of about $75,000 replaced the truck and got the owner back on heavy calls. Approval is never guaranteed, and timing depends on the program and the lender, but files like this one do get placed.

How Trifecta works with towing companies

Trifecta Business Group works on a one advisor, one desk model. You get one dedicated advisor who matches your file to one wholesale lending desk at a time, based on that desk’s underwriting criteria. Your file is never auctioned or sent to a call center.

There is no hard credit pull to explore options. Intake takes about 3 minutes, plus document upload separately.
